FIGURATIVE WORKS ON PAPER GALLERY

Figurative Paintings
1987-1994

The limbless figures in this body of work sometimes seem to be rooted into the ground or standing thigh deep in water. The figures metaphorically speak to our "imperfections" as human beings. In many cases, the figures are statue-like and as such, are objects to be displayed and viewed. Many of the figures are female and talk about "women as objects". Some figures are placed "up on a pedestal" and within "interior spaces", while others have "halos", referring to a "holier than thou" attitude. Color choices and the relatedness between figures provide additional information into the nature of the relationships being expressed. The negative shapes in the paintings reflect the figure's emotional state.

The majority of these paintings are intimate and therefore small scale. Later works, and especially the paintings that explored Sylvia Plath's "Ariel" poems, were larger in scale ( approximately 4'-5').
