WORKS ON PAPER GALLERY
The oil paintings and mixed media drawings
in this series start with poetry.
Short poems that I've written have been recorded on the canvas and exist beneath the painted surface. Some text
remains visible through the painting process, however much of it has been painted over.
The paintings loosely reference the content of the poems, yet are not considered illustrations. The poems are simply
points of departure for these invented landscapes.
The paintings visually juxtapose elements of gravity, suspension, geometric and organic forms. They also explore
concepts regarding time, memory, and things imagined; spoken and unspoken, discovered and hidden. A common theme
that runs through the majority of my work concerns the potency of what lies beneath the surface of things.
The mixed media drawings allow for further investigation of areas of interest within the paintings.
I am interested in how experience becomes poetry and how poetry becomes experience.
